About Shorebird Decoys
Shorebird hunting for food was common in the 19th century from New England through North Carolina. Hunting of most shorebird species was banned by the Federal Migratory Waterfowl Act in 1918, so surviving examples are rare.

Unusual species for the Cape. Carved with split tail and raised wings. Bill is splined through the head. Original paint and bill. Hit by shot, but no damage. Some chipping of the face surrounding the bill.

Carved with extended wingtips and a dropped tail. Classic Long Island-style "S" carved wings. Nearly mint original condition, including paint, bill, and shoe button eyes. Several tiny nail holes in tail.

Superb original condition, including paint and bill (a bill chip on one has been restored). Classic Cuffee carved dropped wings. Bold paint patterns with a nice mellow surface. Cuffee's dates are 1866-1941.
