About Other Factory Decoys
Some commercial decoy factories preceded the Mason Decoy Company and many followed. There is a similarity to the Mason form in most examples, and most of the early decoy factories hand-painted their production. Factory decoys in original paint are highly collectible today.



Hays "Superior" Glasseye Blue-Winged Teal Drake Decoy
Jefferson City, MO, Ca. 1920

Freshly picked in dry, nearly mint original condition. No cracks. Half of the neck filler is missing. Minor flaking on the back on the head. Signed "G.W.C." for the owner. See "Mason Decoys," page 124, for a similar example.

Rare Hays Superior Blue-Winged Teal Drake and Hen Decoy Pair
Jefferson City, MO, Ca. 1925

Rigmates in strong original paint. Drake is untouched with its original neck filler and a tight factory crack on its left side. Hen's neck filler has been replaced and it has a tight crack in its base. See Trayer's "North American Factory Decoys," p. 192.

Strong example in nearly mint original condition. A few dings and a tiny filler chip on the base of the beak on one side. Original taxidermy eyes and bear claw beak.

Matched pair with heads facing left and right. From an Upstate New York gunning rig in untouched (unwashed) condition. Balsa with hardwood beaks in nearly mint original condition. Retain their original wire legs. Not drilled for attachment to an owl.

Exceptionally rare example with turned head in superb original condition. Minor filler loss on one side of hardwood bill. Original wire legs. Not drilled for attachment to an owl. Nearly all Herter's crows were made with straight heads.
