Classic Mallard Drake Decoy
Ward Bros., Crisfield, MD, Ca. 1936

Cedar working decoy in unused original condition. Strong original paint. Professional filler replacement in back of neck and a filled 3/8" hole in the back and one side. Carries Ward Bros. and V L & A Sporting Goods stamps + the V L & A price tag ($10!). The Von Lengerke & Antoinne, or V L & A, partnership was formed in 1891, and quickly became a prominent sporting goods retailer in Chicago. Their last location was at 335 Wabash Avenue in downtown Chicago. The V L & A partnership was formed as an extension of a New York sporting goods retail company known as Von Lengerke & DeMond which was started a short time prior to V L & A.

At the same time, in New York, another prominent sporting goods retailer started business in 1892 as Abercrombie & Fitch. From 1892 through 1938, these two retailers fought for market share catering to an upscale customer base. Both retailers also used the same motto, "GREATEST SPORTING GOODS RETAILER IN THE WORLD".

Like Abercrombie & Fitch, Von Lengerke & Antoinne offered products from the finest manufacturers, and appealed to an upscale clientele. A large array of goods was offered through their catalog and retail store. In 1938, the V L & A Chicago Company was bought out by Abercrombie & Fitch, although they did operate under the V L & A name until the closing of the store in the early 1960s.

17" long.
